Jeff Porter and the Claptets will perform two shows on Sunday especially for kids.
The first time I saw Jeff Porter and the Claptet, I thought "My kids would love this."
We're in luck. The Claptet will perform two shows on Sunday, and they're especially for kids. The shows, which will take place at the PAC, are part of the Tulsa Children’s Museum Family Concert Series.
When I saw Jeff Porter and the Claptet perform it was as an introduction to Booksmart's Literary Death Match last fall. People were milling around, drinking wine, waiting for the main event to start. And then something happened. Most people stopped talking, took their seats and had to check out the stomps, claps and African beat.
It's an African drum beat, minus the traditional drums. All Jeff Porter needs is a wooden box, his two hands and feet. Stomp, stomp, clap.
Porter is a student of African and South American music, and he and his band combine those sounds as body percussionists, using their hands, feet, mouths, boxes and buckets. Sunday's shows will combine the Claptet's body percussion with traditional African percussion instruments, including conga, bata, pandeiro, djembe, shekere and cajon.
If you haven't been able to get your kids to sit still through a music performance, this is the concert for them. Let them clap and stomp along in their seats.
