Tara and Greg Hughes, owners of the In the Raw restaurants, have announced they will bring back En Fuego, an upscale Mexican eatery they operated in Brookside from 2002 to 2005.
Greg Hughes said a three-story former office building across the parking lot from In the Raw South, 6151 S. Sheridan Road, will be torn down, and En Fuego will be constructed on that site.
"I always regretted closing En Fuego in Brookside," Hughes said. "I didn't stick with it quite long enough.
"We will bring back many of the old favorite dishes from En Fuego, and because we are on a hill out here, the new restaurant will have a rooftop bar. We also will have more parking to serve both restaurants."
Hughes said he hopes to get the new En Fuego open by the spring of 2013.
Sea bass, grilled beef tenderloin, lobster tacos, smoked salmon quesadillas and the Bob Marley dip were among the outstanding fare served at En Fuego.
En Fuego was opened in December 2002 in a former S&J Seafood & Oyster Bar location at 3301 S. Peoria Ave., and in 2005, Hughes and college pal Ben Ford (Harrison Ford's son) turned it into Ford's Filling Station.
After Ford's closed, Hughes operated the space as Kampai Lounge before turning the building over to former employee J.L. Lewis, who opened Leon's on the Restless Ribbon in 2008.
