Terence Malick's Bartlesville movie is coming....

(from left) Javier Bardem, Terrence Malick and Ben Affleck go over the shooting of "The Untitled Terrence Malick Project" in downtown Pawhuska.
"The Untitled Terrence Malick Project," the film starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem that was shot last year in Bartlesville, will be released in 2012.
I think that's the conclusion we should draw considering the very important news that filmmaker Terrence Malick announced about his upcoming film schedule.
The announcement came from FilmNation, the company that helped produce Malick's still-being-edited film shot in Bartlesville and Pawhuska last fall: The reclusive, previously slow-moving director has already cast his next two films.
"Lawless" will star Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. "Knight of Cups" will feature both Bale and Blanchett again. Both movies are to be filmed back-to-back in 2012, according to FilmNation.
There are no details on the plot of either project, but then we still have little idea of what his Bartlesville-shot picture is about other than it being a romance.
Malick is notoriously secretive, and so is everyone who agrees to work for him.
But here's what we do know: Malick is currently editing the Oklahoma movie. He has never begun filming a new movie in earnest before completing his previous movie.
Sure, some of you may be aware that Malick did some shooting with Bale and "Lawless" co-star Haley Bennett at Austin City Limits in mid-September. But I think that concert setting has to be considered an opportune moment for shooting a scenario for Malick (who lives in the Austin area) and nothing more.
In addition, FilmNation announced that it has completed international film sales for the Oklahoma-shot "The Untitled Terrence Malick Project," from the United Kingdom to China to everywhere in between -- except for North America.
If editing the film and negotiating the North American sales of the Bartlesville motion picture are what remain, and Malick -- who will be 68 on Nov. 30 -- plans to shoot back-to-back films in 2012 featuring stars who have their own busy schedules, I'd say that means one thing.
Bartlesville's "Untitled Terrence Malick Project" will be released to theaters in 2012. Or certainly by 2013. Remember, this is a man whose "Tree of Life" this summer was only his fifth film in 38 years, so he's never worked at this pace before.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in
movie critic Michael Smith’s
brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
