"The Avengers" marathon is on

"The Avengers" is the blockbuster kickoff to the summer movie season on May 4, and Cinemark Tulsa is staging a one-day advance blowout event, showing a marathon of the six Marvel Comics movies leading up to a midnight premiere of "The Avengers."
Tickets are now on sale for the May 3 marathon — at a fanboy-friendly price of $20 for all six movies, with three of them in 3-D — at Cinemark Tulsa, 10802 E. 71st St.
The films will play in the order of release of Marvel's films beginning with the 2008 movies "Iron Man" at noon, followed by "The Incredible Hulk" starring Edward Norton at 2:50 p.m.; "Iron Man 2" from 2010 at 5 p.m.; "Thor" and "Captain America" from last summer playing at 7:20 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; and the newest film, "The Avengers," premiering at midnight.
Included in the $20 ticket are 3-D presentations of "Thor," "Captain America" and "The Avengers." That's a considerable bargain for moviegoers, considering that the 3-D price for "The Avengers" alone at the midnight premiere is $11.75.
Marvel movie marathons have been on sale in limited major markets at AMC Theatres locations, but with tickets priced at $40 for the six films. Tulsa's AMC Southroad's 20 has not yet been included in that chain's event.
Cinemark's corporate office set the price at $20 and is staging the marathons at the chain's top 25 theaters, which includes the Cinemark Tulsa, according to the theater's general manager, Cameron Bush.
He added that marathon customers will enjoy concessions specials including $1 refills on large drinks, $2 refills on large popcorns (with the first refill free) and $2 hot dogs.

Somehow omitted from the marathon: Howard the Duck.

Howard wasn't as bad as everyone thought. If you went into it knowing what to expect, then you knew it definitely wasn't Donald or Daffy. And it had Lea Thompson, who was quite the looker!

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in
movie critic Michael Smith’s
brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
