"The Hunger Games": No. 1 movie, book and album

Now that's a trifecta: "The Hunger Games" has long been the No. 1 book in America. Last weekend it became the No. 1 movie. This week we learned the soundtrack had debuted at No. 1 on the album chart.

That is impressive synergy. If anyone asks why "The Hunger Games" became as popular as it proved to be at the box-office, tell them: People loved the series of books; producers made a great movie true to the spirit of the series; people interested in the movie also like songs that are sung by Taylor Swift and produced by T-Bone Burnett.

"The Hunger Games" popularity by the numbers:

The book that came out in 2008 is No. 1, a position it first attained in December 2011, around the gift-giving season. Remarkably, sales of Suzanne Collins' trilogy have doubled since the movie's first trailer was released.

The No. 2 book in the U.S.: "Catching Fire," the sequel to "The Hunger Games." The No. 3 book: "Mockingjay," the final book in the trilogy. The No. 4 position on the list belongs to "The Hunger Games Trilogy" collection of the three books.

The movie "The Hunger Games" racked up $152.5 million at the box-office last weekend, which was No. 3 all-time. Going into the weekend (when it will be No. 1 again, probably with $60 million or more), that figure is at $189.9 million through Thursday, and it's the No. 1 movie of 2012, passing "The Lorax."

The soundtrack for "The Hunger Games" is No. 1 in its first week of release, selling 175,000 units, according to Billboard. It's the first soundtrack featuring various artists to hit No. 1 since November 2009, when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" went to No. 1.

"The Hunger Games" is only the 16th soundtrack to debut at No. 1 on the album chart, according to Billboard.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
