The Return of the Admiral Twin

I was 8 years old the first time I saw “Deliverance.” Allow me to explain.
It was at the Admiral Twin Drive-in, summer of 1972. My folks were taking in the now-famously disturbing picture about campers encountering backwoods fiends. My mother must have had no idea of the content, or she must have assumed my 3-year-old brother and I would be asleep by the time any “Close your eyes!” stuff happens.
I only saw a portion of “Deliverance” that night — those parts for which my parents didn’t mandate my staring at the back of the driver’s seat, leaving me to wonder what movie quotes like “You shore have got a purty mouth” meant in context.
What’s the point of recalling this oddly amusing movie memory? The Admiral Twin Drive-in opens Friday night, and it’s time for Tulsans of this generation to make their own memories.
With the biggest screen in the Southwest and room for 1,500 cars, the Admiral Twin returns for its 59th consecutive season of double-sided double-features, starting at dark. That means, for right now, arrive by 8 p.m. Prices for ages 12 and up are $7; ages 5 to 11 are $2.
Remember: You need an FM stereo to hear the movie in your car; clangy window-hanging speakers are a thing of the past.
A note to parents: Check Tulsa World movie listings for subject matter before loading up the kiddies for something they may never forget.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
