A feature-length documentary on Tulsa-bred sports and music legend Wayman Tisdale, “The Wayman Tisdale Story,” is set to air on ESPN and NBA TV this fall, with a DVD and CD/DVD release on Nov. 22 from Rendezvous Music/Mack Avenue.

Tisdale died at age 44 in 2009, from complications of a hard-fought battle with bone cancer.

Told through his own words, “The Wayman Tisdale Story” journeys through Tisdale’s life from this childhood as a preacher’s son to his battle with cancer. The soundtrack will feature 13 tracks, including the previously unreleased track, “Slam Dunk,” produced by Jeff Lorber, and “Cryin’ For Me,” written and performed as a tribute to Wayman by another Oklahoma native and Tisdale’s friend, country star Toby Keith.

Tisdale attended Booker T. Washington high school, played basketball for the University of Oklahoma and was the first collegiate player to be a first team All-American in his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons.

He also won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics. He left college to enter the 1985 NBA draft, and played with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

He also was a self-taught jazz musician and played bass guitar. He released nine studio albums that powered up the contemporary jazz charts, including his posthumously-released “The Fonk Record,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard jazz charts.
