My father-in-law died early Monday morning. He had been in our care for 10 years, ever since his wife died. He had dealt with the effects of several strokes over the years that had slowly eroded his abilities to do things for himself, and in the rare moments when he allowed himself to express his deepest thoughts, he would make brief -- and understandably bitter -- remarks about the things he could no longer do.
Which is why I think he would have appreciated the humor my wife and I found when we were sorting through the mail that Monday afternoon. His mail has been routed to our address ever since we had to move him to a nursing home, and as I flipped through the stack, I came across a large buff envelope from some fly--by-night insurance company.
I just held it up for my wife to see, and we both broke out in simultaneous laughter.
On the front of the envelope it read:
"Howard Gullickson -- here's that second chance you've been waiting for."
