It can be pretty depressing and somewhat infuriating to read some of the comments on Tulsa World stories. I'd probably be better off emotionally if I simply ignored them, but it's like watching a train wreck, I just can't help myself.

There is what I believe to be a small, but very vocal, group of commenters who often dominate the space. They dislike most everything and especially anything that has to do with improving Tulsa, in particular downtown.

These prolific folks were highly critical of the BOK Center before it was built. They claimed that no one would show up for any shows. Now that the arena has been open for almost a year and has proven to be highly successful, they have shifted their attention to the new downtown baseball park.

They have the same complaints and predictions as they did for the arena before it opened. They say no one will go to the ballpark because it has no parking available, is in a high-crime district and that no one wants to go downtown anyway.

Of course, these charges are as false for the ballpark as they were for the arena. There is adequate parking, including at the nearby OSU-Tulsa campus. The crime rate for downtown is no worse than any other part of Tulsa. And people do come downtown, the naysayers simply don't come downtown to see for themselves.

They say that the money for the ballpark could be used for other things, like improving the streets. They have evidently forgotten that Tulsa passed a bond issue to improve Tulsa's streets and that that work started in June.

Here's a wager: When the ballpark is open and is successful we won't hear a peep from the critics. By then they will probably be fussing about all the orange cones interrupting their driving.

You just can't please some people.
