The joys of copyediting

Journalism, so the saying goes, is the art of creating enough copy to fill the space.

It has often been pointed out to me that my efforts here at the Tulsa World often go above and beyond the call the aforementioned duty, in part because I tend to use words like "aforementioned," that just take up a whole lot of room.

Anyway -- the final paragraph of the review of Tulsa Opera's "The Magic Flute" was excised for...well, it was cut. The review should have concluded thusly:

"New artistic director Kostis Protopapas prepared the Tulsa Opera Chorus, which was in strong and excellent voice all evening, and led the Tulsa Opera Orchestra in a reading of Mozart’s score that was finely colored and perfectly balanced with the stage.
“The Magic Flute” continues with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. For tickets, call 587-4811, or online at www.tulsaworld.com/MyTix."

Thank you, Jim, for clarifying!

Thanks for the second time! I thought this may have been edited out, since you always mention the chorus & orchestra in your reviews.

The silver lining is I discovered your blog, and just spent a pleasurable few minutes reading some of your prior posts. THANK YOU for your advocacy of the arts in Tulsa!

PS: We couldn't be happier that Kostis Protopapas is Tulsa Opera's Artistic Director!

Martha,

Thank you so much for the kind words about this "blog-thingy," as a friend of mine calls it.

And I agree that the choice of Mr. Protopapas as artistic director bodes quite well for Tulsa Opera. to judge by what I've seen from the red seats, he has a fine rapport with the orchestra, the performances he has conducted over the years have always been well controlled and expressive, and his work with the Tulsa Opera Chorus has resulted in some excellent performances by the group.

I shall be very interested to see how the company develops under his direction.
