Here's the order and screening times for the best picture nominee marathon at AMC Southroads 20 on Feb. 21:
"Milk," first up at 10:30 a.m.
"The Reader," 1:05 p.m.
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," 3:45 p.m.
"Slumdog Millionaire," 7:15 p.m.
"Frost/Nixon," 9:45 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for all five films, $25 for AMC MovieWatcher members (get this card, a bargain for avid filmgoers with specials like reduced-price concessions and more increasing with the frequency with which you buy tickets).

Bonus: Ticket-buyers will each receive a large bucket of popcorn, with free refills for the day. Each film will have a 15-minute break in between. Enough time for necessities, if you know what I mean.

Five movies, 13 hours-plus of screenings, it may sound like work. But consider: See what you want, come and go as you please, enjoy the two or three you haven't seen and it's still a bargain with the popcorn.

The films are all showing in one dedicated theater for the event, and ticket-buyers will be supplied a souvenir lanyard to wear, allowing entry and exit throughout that Saturday.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
