I'm excited.

Experimental pop/rock iconoclast Beck is re-releasing his climactic aural masterpiece "Odelay" as a deluxe edition on Jan. 29, 2008.

Way back in 1996, Rolling Stone's David Fricke reviewed the album, saying, "For his unaffected exuberance, fervent eclecticism, precocious ingenuity and stubborn refusal to take himself too seriously, Beck Hansen is rock & roll's Man of the Year."

Nearly 11 years later, it was called "One of the Best Albums of Our Lifetime 1993-2006" by MOJO magazine.

Now, his fourth album has been expanded into a two-CD deluxe edition, with the addition of two ever-before-released tracks from the original sessions, a soundtrack contribution, and 16 b-sides and compilation tracks never-before-released in the U.S.

Forging a sound from the roots of folk, blues, rock and hip hop with the sensibilities of D.I.Y, noise, experimental music and the possibilities of modern technology, Odelay stands (as discussed in the All-Music Guide) as "a dense, endlessly intriguing album overflowing with ideas...a fluid, creative, and startlingly original work."

Indeed.

"Odelay - Deluxe Edition," from Geffen/UMe, adds tracks produced by the Dust Brothers, a song from the film A Life Less Ordinary, music co-produced by Mario Caldato Jr., an U.N.K.L.E. (featuring James Lavelle) remix of "Where It's At," and Aphex Twin and Mickey P. remixes of "Devil's Haircut."

There's much more, including the song, "Devil Got My Woman," (a cover of the Skip James classic recorded at the original Sun Studios in Memphis).

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
