The week ahead: Parties, runs and paper airplanes

Some of the week's options:

Sunday: Mannheim Steamroller
Christmas may be over, but you can still enjoy one last Christmas show Sunday when Mannheim Steamroller performs at the Tulsa PAC at 2 p.m. Created in the 1980s by composer and multi-instrumentalist Chip Davis, the band mixes classical music forms with modern acoustic and electronic instruments.

Monday: New Year's Eve
There are several parties going on around town to celebrate NYE, including the fourth annual The Party! New Year’s Ball Drop at thr Blue Dome District, on Second Street between Elgin and Greenwood avenues. From 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., the free outdoor street party will feature a lighted ball drop and fireworks show, as well as live entertainment.
A VIP party, which will include food, drinks, entertainment and dancing, will be located in the Blue Dome area and will be available for $75 a person. Tickets are available at tulsaworld.com/THEparty.

Tuesday: Start the year running
Start off 2013 with the 7th annual Tatur’s Polar Bear Plunge.
The two-mile race includes three plunges into swimming pools. The first race starts at 1 p.m. Tuesday at River Parks West, and the second starts at 2 p.m.
Music, pizza and a costume contest will also be part of the event. Registration is $40 for adults and $25 for kids 12 and younger.

Or join Life Time Fitness as it hosts a Commitment Day 5k event on Tuesday. The run will begin at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park.
Organizers say Commitment Day is a day where thousands of people across the country will join together at regional 5k events to commit to a healthier way of life.
Registration is $39. To register in advance, visit tulsaworld.com/commitmentday. Race day registration begins at 8 a.m.

Wednesday: Check out the museums
Wind down after all the celebrations by visiting one of the local museums.
“Scenes from the Low Countries: Dutch and Flemish Prints in the Age of Rembrandt” is at Philbrook Museum, 2727 S. Rockford Road. Admission is $9.
“Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey” is at Gilcrease Museum, 1400 N. Gilcrease Museum Road. Admission is $8.
Or take the kids to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, 3624 N. 74th E. Ave, to enjoy the hands-on exhibit “Outreach to Space.” Admission is $12.

Thursday: Paper airplanes
On Thursday, consider participating in the "Paper Airplane Challenge" at downtown's Central Library. From 1 to 2 p.m., kids and adults can learn new paper airplane designs or create their own. At 1:45 p.m., the library will have an "air show" from the third-floor balcony to see whose plane flies the farthest and the most accurately.
