This just in: Tulsa dates for "The Iron Lady," "The Artist"

"The Artist" opens in Tulsa next week.

Yes, the black-and-white silent movie arrives in town soon. Absolutely, Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher is coming to Tulsa.

"The Iron Lady" opens on Friday at AMC Southroads 20 and Cinemark Tulsa, with Streep likely to receive her 17th Academy Award nomination for playing the former British prime minister.

For that matter, "Carnage" -- based on the Tony Award-winning play about two couples meeting after their children are involved in a fight at school -- also opens on Friday at AMC Southroads 20. Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly play one couple, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz the other pair.

Finally, word has arrived that Circle Cinema will be opening "The Artist" on the next Friday, Jan. 27. It is unknown whether other locations will host the film, but it seems likely.

"The Artist," very likely the favorite at this year's Oscars, is gaining notice for its story of a famous silent film leading man whose star begins to fade when "talking pictures" arrive, and the woman whose star is born with talkies and who loves the older man.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
