This weekend: Festivals, opera and a designer showcase

The 2012 Designer Showcase opens Friday at the 97-year-old McGuire House, 1132 E. 18th St.

Much to do this weekend, from area festivals to walks and opera performances.

Thursday
East End Village open house
Enjoy food, drinks and local music at an open house of the East End Village neighborhood, in the 800 block of East Third Street in downtown Tulsa, from 5 to 10 p.m. today. The Artist’s Loft, Studio 818, Elements Salon, Girouard Winery, Divine Barbering and Voulez Vous Photography and other business in the East End Village will be open.

‘Tulsa the Teenager’
Local educator and historian Julia Brady Ratliff will be at the Tulsa Historical Society, 2445 S. Peoria Ave., at 6:30 p.m. today to speak about Tulsa’s history during the early 20th century, the years after incorporation.
The event is free with museum admission, which is $5; $3 for seniors.

Friday
‘Madame Butterfly’
Tulsa Opera’s “Madame Butterfly,” based on Giacomo Puccini’s tale of a young Japanese girl whose love for an American sailor leads to tragedy, continues this weekend at the Tulsa PAC’s Chapman Music Hall.
Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

‘Destination Claremore’
The nine-day “Destination Claremore” event kicks off Friday. A variety of activities are scheduled throughout the city through May 5.
Visitors can watch wool be shorn from sheep and turned into usable products April 27-28 at Shepherd’s Cross farm during “Woolly Weekend.” Or visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum for American Cowboys Traders Days, April 27-29. A gun and knife show will be held April 28-29 at the JM Davis Arms and Historical Museum, and the Route 66 Nut House will host an antique show April 28-29.

Red Fern Festival
The sixth annual Red Fern Festival is set for Friday through Sunday at Norris Park in Tahlequah.
The festival materialized as a way to honor Tahlequah native Wilson Rawls and his best-selling book, “Where the Red Fern Grows.”
Activities such as the Hound Dog Field Trails highlight aspects of the novel. Children’s activities ranging from old-fashioned 1930s-era games to modern art activities are also part of the festival, as are the Red Fern Chili Cook Off and Barbeque Extravaganza, live entertainment, a 5k run and one-mile dog jog, and the Tahlequack Duck Race.

Designer Showcase

The 2012 Designer Showcase opens Friday at the 97-year-old McGuire House, 1132 E. 18th St.
The home is open through May 20. Admission is $12 for tickets purchased in advance or $15 at the door. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and extended hours Thursdays in May from 5 to 8 p.m.

Saturday
Turkish Festival
Raindrop Turkish House is hosting the third annual Turkish Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at its Broken Arrow location, 4444 W. Houston St.
The event also serves as the official grand opening for Raindrop Turkish House’s new location.
Attendees will enjoy live performances of Turkish folk dances, samples of Turkish and Mediterranean food, Turkish arts and crafts, and a variety of other activities. The event is free.

Black Keys

The Black Keys with special guest Arctic Monkeys will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the BOK Center.

Before the show, local musician Stephen Speaks will put on a free concert, 6 p.m. at the BOK Center Outdoor Plaza at the corner of Third and Frisco streets.

Race Against Racism
The second annual Race Against Racism, hosted by the YWCA Tulsa, is set for Saturday.
The course will start downtown at John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park/ONEOK Field. The one-mile Justice Walk begins at 9 a.m. and the 5k begins at 9:30 a.m.
Registration is $20 in advance and $25 on race day. All proceeds will benefit YWCA Tulsa’s Health & Wellness program and Racial Justice initiatives.

Car show
The Northeast Oklahoma Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club is hosting a car show Saturday at the Hyatt Place Southern Hills Hotel, 7037 S. Zurich.
Judging will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., during which time the public is invited to view the cars.
