This weekend: Opera, live painting and a Titanic centennial program

The annual Herbal Affair festival in downtown Sand Springs attracts about 30,000 people.

packed
with options. There are things for the music lovers, book lovers, art lovers and opera lovers. There are kid-friendly activities and pet-friendly activities. You can enjoy the weather outdoors or avoid allergies indoors.

Thursday
Live Paint
This month’s Third Thursdays program at Philbrook Museum will feature artist Bunky Echo-Hawk from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today. Echo-Hawk will perform an interactive live painting demonstration, playing off ideas from the audience and from the museum’s exhibits. Echo-Hawk is a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts and works in a variety of media, including creating paintings and designing T-shirts and shoes.

‘Oklahoma Originals’
Grady Nichols, Jenny Labow and Radio Radio will be at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, 701 S. Main St., at 7:30 p.m. Friday for a concert presented by the Broken Arrow Arts and Humanities Council as part of its Encore Series. Tickets are $25, available at

Titanic centennial program
The Tulsa Theatre Organ Society is presenting a free program to observe the centennial of the Titanic’s sinking. Local performers will play music that was played on the ship. The program is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Tulsa Technology Center’s Broken Arrow campus at 129th E. Avenue (Olive) and 111th Street (Florence).
‘Are You My Mother?’
The PAC Trust Imagination Series presents “Are You My Mother?,” a play based on the children’s picture book by P.D. Eastman. Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday at the PAC’s John H. Williams Theatre. Tickets are $10, available at

Bark Walk
Tulsa Boxer Rescue’s third annual Bark Walk and Pet Fest is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Haikey Creek Park, 11327 S. Garnett Ave., Broken Arrow.
The walk, just under a mile, starts at 10 a.m. Registration for the walk is $20. Pet Fest, which is free, follows from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors will be selling everything from roofing to pet supplies, as well as giving information about pet day care options and training.
Microchipping will be available for $20, and pets will be available for adoption.

Book signing
The Ida Red Boutique, 3336 S. Peoria Ave., will host a book signing for Tulsa writer Ann Patton for her book “Dan’s War on Poverty,” 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The book is a biography of Dan Allen, a priest who founded the Neighbor for Neighbor social service program. The book also gives readers a look at poverty in Tulsa from the 1960s to 1980s.
Besides the book signing, the evening will feature food and beverages, along with live music by Jay Lesikar.
Herbal Affair & Festival
The annual Herbal Affair festival is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Sand Springs.
The festival attracts about 30,000 people. Guests can find plenty of fresh herb plants and enjoy a day filled with music, art and food at the festival.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., children can enjoy face painting, games, and an art project at the Peppermint Lane tent between Main Street and Garfield Avenue on Broadway.

‘Madame Butterfly’
Tulsa Opera’s “Madame Butterfly,” based on Giacomo Puccini’s tale of a young Japanese girl whose love for an American sailor leads to tragedy is in fact a 20th century work, opens Saturday at the Tulsa PAC’s Chapman Music Hall.
Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday and April 27, and 2:30 p.m. April 29.

Walk MS
Tulsa’s Walk MS is set for Saturday at Veterans Park, 1875 S. Boulder Drive. The walk is an annual fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and money raised goes toward research and programs. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 9 a.m. An MS Expo will be part of the event, featuring local vendors such as pharmaceutical and mobility companies. Activities for kids will be available and a Battle of the Bands will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration is free, but donations are encouraged.

Signature symphony, classical guitar
