My top picks for this weekend include:

1. BEN.BEN. CD RELEASE SHOWS
with art on display at Blank Slate by Ren & Lucio
Celebrate some of Tulsa's most expressive and talented musicians and artists with the release of "New Stone Works," featuring local musicians Annie Ellicott, Jeff Davis, Cris Foster, Matt Hayes, Nic Foster and Jonathan Taylor. Ready to take over the world, Ben.Ben. has designed a third-eye–crushing, cryptic, muscular and entheogenic rock and roll fantasy. It's candy for your eyes and ears.
>> 5:30 p.m. Friday. Listening party only. All ages. Free. Under the Mooch, 1425 S. Harvard Ave.
>> 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday. All ages party and performances. No smoking, general admission with seating. $5 cover. Blank Slate, 222 E. First St.

2. IT'S A DANCE-OFF!
OK, so it's not. It's an art-off of sorts, when Black Mesa goes against live4this, two of Tulsa's most expressive and experimental artists, in the presentation of "Public Secrets," an exhibit of new works honoring Tulsas creative roots. See three-by-four foot mixed media silkscreens featuring yearbook photos of Tulsa legends including Leon Russell, the GAP band, S.E. Hinton and more. Come for the "second" opening gala (with live music!) on Saturday night ... who will win? You decide!
10 a.m.-10 p.m., seven days a week through Dec. 31. All ages. Free. Liggett Studio, 314 S. Kenosha Ave.

... and two things that are NOT in this week's roundup, but are definitely worth seeing:

3. 'CHRISTMAS ON MARS' and 'RAINBOW AROUND THE SUN'
By World Scene Writer Michael Smith: On Friday at the Circle, "Rainbow Around the Sun" is the rock-musical (think "Tommy" by The Who or "Hedwig and the Angry Inch") brainchild of Matthew Alvin Brown, an Oklahoma City singer-actor who will answer questions along with his co-directors and producer between 7:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. showings of his film. Another midnight movie is set for Saturday night: "Christmas on Mars," described as "a fantastical film freakout featuring the Flaming Lips," is a sci-fi flick directed by Wayne Coyne, the frontman for the Oklahoma-based music group, the Flaming Lips, and it features the band among the cast. The film is not rated.
Both movies are showing at Circle Cinema, 8 S. Lewis Ave.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
