1. GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY
Ghostland Observatory’s rollicking loops, funky beats and punk propulsion are created by two Austin, Texas, men: a cape-wearing Thomas Turner and his partner in gambol, the wild and pigtailwearing Aaron Behrens. Indeed, the dynamic duo has concocted the mythical amalgam of noisy, experimental ghetto-electro rock mayhem that’s upbeat, danceable and larger than life. Behrens’ Freddy Mercury-esque falsettos, stage-spanning dance moves and flashy tribal braids, and Turner’s cape-wearing and hyper-focused stage demeanors belie their small-town Texas upbringings. Turner admits he’s usually quite mild-mannered and quiet, and that Behrens is actually a family man.
Although, when asked, “Well, you can’t wear your blue cape all the time, right?” Turner’s response of “That’s what you think!” invoked images of Superman’s hasty retreat to his Fortress of Solitude. … And a huge laugh.
8:30 p.m. Saturday, Cain’s Ballroom, 423 N. Main St. All ages. Call (866) 443-8849.

2. NINE INCH NAILS
In 2007, Spin magazine described Trent Reznor as “the most vital artist in music.” In case you didn’t know, Reznor is the megaselling hit act Nine Inch Nails. Since 1988, he’s been primary singer, songwriter, producer and instrumentalist, taking the industrial electrorock act out of the swarthy underground and into the mainstream, and breaking nearly all the rules in the process. Reznor’s solidified his place in modern music history, with more than 20 million albums sold worldwide for NIN since 1989’s “Pretty Hate Machine.”
8 p.m. Saturday, BOK Center, 200 S. Denver Ave. All ages. See page 14 for ticket information or call 1-866-7-BOKCTR.

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
