Research shows that two of the most influential musicians of the Depression era — or quite possibly ever — never met.

But what if they had?

The SummerStage Festival presentation of "Time Changes Everything" is a two-scene, one-act play that examines the philosophies, similarities and differences between Western swing great Bob Wills and folk legend Woody Guthrie.

Wills was born into poverty. His glitzy hats and spangled Western wear belied his roots. He sang about good times and played Western swing dance shows that turned into notoriously wild parties. He wanted an escape from the trying times.

Guthrie was born into a middle-class family in Okemah and was educated, yet he dressed like a hobo. He played down his relative prosperity and focused on the downtrodden. He wrote folk music that spoke to the social and political issues of the day.

"And both wanted to help people during the Depression. Both wanted to change the world around them," said play co-writer John Wooley. "And they did change the world around them. They just did it in vastly different ways."

Over eight years, an idea for a play about the two took shape.
