The Cherry Street Farmers Market reminded us this week that time is running out to get your order in for locally raised turkeys for the holidays.
Greenwood Farms is still taking orders at the market, but there are not many left. Greenwood Farms is in Big Cabin and their turkeys are raised on the farm, according to the Oklahoma Food Coop.
Last year around Thanksgiving, I talked to Arlus Walters of Walters Hatchery near Stilwell. He said that on Nov. 1, he makes his turkeys available on the Oklahoma Food Cooperative website. Last year, all 150 of his Heritage turkeys were sold out within about three hours.
But another ranch we contacted last year said they started taking turkey orders at the beginning of the year and sold out in April.
So consider going to the farmers market, or contacting Walters Hatchery, 918-696-0464, for more information on local turkeys.
