Tips for taking kids to live theater

If you take your kids to the theater when they're young, you're likely to have theater lovers for life.

But how young is too young? And, what shows are appropriate?

Thursday's performance by the Vienna Boys' Choir is a good example of a production preteens and teens can appreciate. The famed choir, comprised of boys ages 10 to 14, will be at the Mabee Center at 7:30 p.m.

A show such as this isn't necessarily a good show for young children, who would more likely enjoy shows geared for kids. But, the Vienna Boys' Choir is a nice introduction for preteens and teenagers who have the attention span and understanding to appreciate the beauty of this music.

Remember these tips when taking kids to the theater:

  • Talk about the show before you go. Prepare kids for the show by showing them a video clip you can find online or reading pieces of the original work. If it's a musical, familiarize the kids with the music in the days before the production.

  • Arrive early. Particularly if it's your child's first show, you don't want to be racing to your seat. Give yourself some time to walk around the lobby, look at the theater and read the playbill.

  • Look for community theater. Community theater productions often have shows for younger children. These are some of the best shows for young children since you don't have to worry about disturbing people without kids.

  • Make it a date after the show. Kids will have even better memories of the show if you go somewhere to talk about it afterward. It doesn't have to be grand – just grab an ice cream or light dinner after the show to talk about the costumes, music, lights and experience.
