Having survived an onslaught of celebrations each month since October, I cheered at this mommy blogger's rage against
holiday overkill .
It was inspired by her children's disappointment with St. Patrick's Day.
Apparently, there are some parents who go the extra mile with hiding gold coins and putting up leprechaun traps.
"When I was a kid we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by wearing something green. THE END."
This comes after the sugar-fest of Valentine's Day, which came after New Year's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving and October.
"As if Christmas wasn’t already hard enough as a parent, someone also decided that we have to move an Elf around every day, into creative tableaus?
"And then someone else decided that the Advent Calendar was A Thing beyond a simple religious observation and now involves some kind of gift each day leading up to Christmas?"
Then, she mentions all the school holidays - Pi Day, Dr. Seuss birthday, 100 days of school day, etc.
"I don’t like the feeling of disappointing my kids. But I refuse to give into this holiday overkill. I’m overwhelmed enough as it is."
Amen!
It's not that all those things aren't fun, but it's difficult to keep up.
The bar is raised to make every holiday - no matter the significance - into a big event.
It would be nice if there was a collective movement to go simple, again.
