We'll have a more complete report in Wednesday's paper -- perhaps earlier on the web -- but for now:

Tulsa Ballet has never been a company to "phone in" a performance, but for those of us who have been watching this company closely for the past few years, Monday night's performance at the Joyce Theater in New York showed this company at the top of its form.

There seemed to be an extra sense of energy and urgency and confidence to the company's dancing, as if the prospect of performing in the cultural capital of the country, where every major dance company comes to prove itself, weighed not at all on their minds.

The evening opened with the explosion of color and warped classical ballet that is "Elite Syncopations," Kenneth MacMillan's ballet set to rags by Scott Joplin and others; followed by Nacho Duato's powerful "Por vos Muero," a ballet that retains its ineffable beauty and poignancy through some marvelously fluid and musical dancing by Tulsa Ballet; and ending with Young Soon Hue's "This is Your Life," a piece created for Tulsa Ballet, that uses the passion of tango music to inform the stories of some everyday people.

The ovations for the first two pieces were strong and appreciative, while the finale earned a standing ovation.

The crowd included more than its share of Oklahomans, including Gov. Brad Henry and wife Kim, Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, representatives of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, as well as transplanted Tulsan artist Patrick Gordon, as well as a number of Tulsa Ballet board members.
