Tulsa Opera is one of the recipients of more than $200,000 in grants given out by Opera America, the national service organization for the art form.

Tulsa Opera received a $14,000 Audience Development grant to help underwrite programs the company plans to present in conjunction with its production of "Dead Man Walking," to be staged Feb. 25 and March 2 and 4 at the Tulsa PAC.

The opera company will co-sponsor a public event with Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book "Dead Man Walking" that inspired the Academy Award-winning movie starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn, and which composer Jake Heggie and playwright Terence McNally transformed into an opera.

In addition, Tulsa Opera will present a series of lectures by composer Heggie, and will collaborate with Living Arts of Tulsa in an exhibit titled “Crime and Punishment.”

Sixteen other opera companies received such grants from Opera America, including two companies that are using the funds in conjunction with operas by Jake Heggie. Fort Worth Opera is staging the composer's "Three Decembers," while the Pittsburgh Opera will present his "Moby-Dick."

Tulsa Opera's "Dead Man Walking" will be directed by Johnathon Pape, and will star Kirstin Chavez and Michael Mayes in the leading roles.

Since we don't have a show on the 25th, I may be able to make that performance! I applaud our opera for doing some great and contemporary Opera Theatre! Bravo!
