Tulsa native in "Breaking Pointe" TV series

Tulsa native Ronnie Underwood is one of the dancers who will be featured in the new CW documentary series “Breaking Pointe,” which premieres Thursday.

An article in Tuesday’s New York Times on the show features a show of Underwood in performance, and describes him as “a self-professed gear head and (the) ‘most unlikely ballet dancer you will ever meet.’”

The series documents the day-to-day experiences of dancers with Salt Lake City’s Ballet West, a 37-member company, during the 2011-2012 season, as it prepared for productions of “Don Quixote,” Ben Stevenson’s “Dracula” and a mixed-bill production that included Jiri Kylian’s “Petit Mort” – ballets that are familiar to most Tulsa Ballet audiences.

Newsday describes the show as “more documentary than ‘reality’ show, which some viewers will appreciate and others won't. Explosive dynamics aren't here. But intensely felt dreams, desires and tears are. Along with lots of cool young guys who actually talk about their feelings!”

Underwood is a relative newcomer to Ballet West, joining the company in 2011. Prior to that, he was a principal dancer with Oregon Ballet Theatre and Oklahoma City Ballet, Ballet Hispanico and American Ballet Theatre.

He began his training at the Tulsa School of Ballet, and danced as an apprentice with Tulsa Ballet before joining what is now Texas Ballet Theatre.
