Could ABC's "Once Upon a Time" get some help? KHAREN HILL/ABC

Fairytales apparently due come true.

Enough at least that ABC, whose “Once Upon a Time” fairytale series has been successful this TV season, is ordering a pilot episode for “Beauty and the Beast.”

The drama project will be written by “Jericho” co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg. ABC describes it as a “a period/fantastical re-imagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world wherein a beautiful and tough Princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast.”

The series is being considered as a possible companion for “Once Upon a Time” in the 8 p.m. Sunday time slot, according to ABC.

The ABC pilot is not to be confused with the “Beauty and the Beast” pilot ordered by the CW.

The CW project is loosely based on the 1980s TV series which starred Linda Hamilton, ex-wife of “Avatar” director James Cameron and star of the first two films in the “Terminator” franchise. That series, which aired on CBS 1987-1990, developed its own cult-like following by focusing on the relationship between Vincent, a noble man-beast, and Catherine Chandler, a district attorney, who meet in the subterranean world of New York City. She was beaten and left to die in Central Park but was rescued by Vincent who introduces her to his hidden community and continues to serve as her guardian angel in the crime-filled city.
The CW show is described as ”a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist,” according to deadline.com.

FYI: A pilot is an episode designed to sell a show to a television network and an order to produce a pilot does not guarantee the show will receive a series order.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
