Two very different literary ladies in town

Two very different writers will be in Tulsa for special events that occur at about the same time Tuesday night.

Best-selling novelist P.C. Cast will be inducted into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame Tuesday night, at a ceremony held at the Philbrook Museum of Art, 2727 S. Rockford Road.

The first half of the evening -- a reception and dinner -- is sold out, said Teresa Miller, director of the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers, which oversees the Hall of Fame.

"However," she said, "the actual presentation ceremony, which begins at 8 p.m., is open to the public."

Even so, seating will be limited to what the Philbrook Museum's Patti Johnson Wilson Hall can accommodate.

Cast published her first novel, "Goddess by Mistake," in 2001. In the space of a decade she has become one of the state's most successful authors, thanks in large part to the "House of Night" series of young-adult paranormal romance novels that she co-authors with daughter Kristin Cast.

Meanwhile, at Harwelden, 2210 S. Main St., Cathleen Schine, who has been described by some critics as "a modern-day Jane Austen," will be the guest of the latest BookSmart Tulsa event, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Schine has published eight novels, including two ("The Love Letter" and "Rameau's Niece") that were adapted into films. "The Three Weissmanns of Westport," her latest novel, is an homage to Austen's "Sense and Sensibility."
