Wayne Hancock

UPDATE: A Friday birthday concert and celebration by western swing and rockabilly icon Wayne Hancock has been moved to Crystal Pistol in downtown Tulsa. The show will be 10 p.m. Friday at the Pistol, 417 N. Main St. It's free.

The show was originally planned for Friday at First Street Music Hall, which closed its doors this week.

First Street Music Hall was comprised of three clubs -- Blank Slate, Exit 6C and Cappellas -- and is most notable as an early performance spot for "American Idol" superstar David Cook.

Please read the full story, with updated quotes from Hancock, First Street Music Hall former owner Jeff Martinson, and future plans he has for another downtown venue at tulsaworld.com.

April 30, 1:26 p.m.: Several upcoming concerts planned at the First Street Music Hall in downtown Tulsa may be in jeopardy, including a Friday birthday blowout for honky-tonk and western swing icon Wayne Hancock.

"Yes, we're closing," said venue owner and property lessee Jeff Martinson in a phone call on Thursday. "We're still trying to get everything figured out and get Wayne's birthday show moved to another venue."

The venue, which is comprised of three clubs -- Blank Slate, Exit 6C and Cappellas -- is most notable as an early performance spot for "American Idol" superstar David Cook.

Rumors of closure have circulated for weeks. However, acts including Hancock and Ian Moore still have tour dates posted to their official web sites for the venue through May.

"I'm really looking forward to this show," Hancock said in an Wednesday interview with the Tulsa World.

But that show may not happen. Nor may other shows scheduled in upcoming weeks through the venue, unless they're moved to other locations.

Michael Sager, who owns to property, rented to club owners Martinson and David Teegarden Jr. Sager confirmed that the club owners would be moved out of the building by the end of the day Thursday.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
