How about Gov. Sarah Palin's latest attempt to call Sen. Barack Obama's character into question?
Palin's most recent attack should make even Karl Rove blush (although I'm sure it didn't). She did her best to link Obama to William Ayers, an old '60s Weatherman. That never really got much traction, other than with the truly devoted.
Ayers must be too American for Palin. This week she trotted out the name of Rashid Khalidi to link to Obama. Of course, the ties between the two are just as weak as those between Obama and Ayers, but Khalidi is a Muslim name. Yes, he had some ties to the Middle East. He is a noted professor of Middle East studies at Columbia University. But he was born in the United States in 1950 and holds several degrees, including one from Yale.
He became acquainted with Obama while he was a professor at the University of Chicago. Does Khalidi have strong opinions about the Palestinians and the relationship of Israel in the Middle East? Yes. Does that make him some sort of terrorist? Of course not. Is there any real evidence to link him to the Palestinian Liberation Organization? Not much.
And there are reports that Sen. John McCain has donated as much as $500,000 to causes championed by Khalidi. Did Palin not check with the boss before firing this latest shot?
The fact is, the Palin attack has become too common in this campaign. A campaign, by the way, that McCain pledged to keep clean and on topic.
By bringing up Khalidi's name it becomes sadly too obvious what the point was. He has that Muslim name. Just like Obama. Get it? Of course, Obama isn't a Muslim. He's Christian. But don't let that fact get in the way of a good smear.
Disgusting.
