Max Page, the 7-year-old who played a mini Darth Vader in Volkswagen's popular 2011 Super Bowl commercial, will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a congenital heart defect, according to Deutsch Inc., ad agency to VW.

Max was a baby when he was diagnosed with the heart problem, and was wearing a pacemaker when the commercial was made, MSNBC has reported.

Deutsch LA says on its blog that "Max is an ambassador for Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, where the surgery is taking place, and he’s trying to raise money for other kids who suffer from heart problems. Deutsch employees have raised several thousand dollars for Max, and Deutsch is matching that donation."

Max's parents appeared on the "Today" show this morning to talk about his surgery.
