Video: Watch Oklahoma Oscar nominee's makeup magic

That's Gary Oldman beneath Oklahoma native Matthew Mungle's Oscar-winning makeup design for 1992's "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

Matthew Mungle went from Atoka dairy farm kid to Oscar-winning, Emmy-winning makeup artist. The story of how he did it is described in my interview with him on the cover of this Friday's Scene section.

He'll be trying to win his second Academy Award (he won in 1992 for "Dracula") on Sunday night for turning Glenn Close into an Irishman in the movie "Albert Nobbs."

What an accommodating fellow. It was a pleasure to talk to Matthew as he expressed excitement about the Admiral Twin Drive-in being rebuilt and other Oklahoma connections we shared.

As with any article there's never enough room to wedge in all of the funny stories (the makeup man on people shopping in his storage room: "OK, I want that body, and I need three of those body parts, and that brain over there.") or to get across just how good Matthew's impression of Oliver Stone is (Matthew did makeup on Stone's "Heaven and Earth,"
"Natural Born Killers" and "W.").

What's not in question is his makeup designing skills, on full display in a very neat Good Morning America segment that aired last week in preparation for the Oscars.

There are examples of his work, a tour of his Hollywood makeup shop, and then the capper: Matthew transforms GMA correspondent Cameron Mathison into a 70-year-old man (with Mathison's wife waiting outside for a "reveal" to see what her hubby will look like in 30 or so years).

Check out that video below, and then root on Matthew on Sunday night!

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
