Win a
FREE
pair to the Friday night kickoff of the return of Tim Barraza's original Tulsa
Reggaefest
!
Enter by answering the following questions in the comments section, below.
The contest runs Sunday-Monday here at Barrelhouse Beat Blog. Winners will be chosen at random and emailed and messaged at your Tulsa World Online account. Several pairs of tickets will be given away.
According to the BBC: "Reggae is a unique fusion of local folk music with outside influences. The local folk music was a Jamaican form called mento, but in the '40s and '50s Jamaicans were also listening to music from the US – jazz, bebop, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll."
Now, let's see what you know about it:
1. Name two genres of music that have influenced reggae.
2. What spiritual movement and ideology is often associated with reggae music?
3. Translated into Jamaican English, what does
rege-rege
mean?
4. That said, what did music icon Bob Marley say the word reggae really meant?
5. What year was Tulsa's first Reggaefest?

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
