Okemah-born folk icon Woody Guthrie sings to children in this undated courtesy photo.
As part of the “
Woody at One Hundred: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration 1912-2012
” celebrations starting next week, music teacher
Caroline Johnson
will bring Guthrie’s timeless kid’s music to life.
Her children’s chorus, featuring 70 kindergarten through fifth-graders from
Riverfield Country Day School
, will perform a 45-minute set of songs,
2 p.m. Sunday
at
Gilcrease Museum
, 1400 Gilcrease Museum Road.
“I’ve been teaching them for almost 30 years and never cease to be heart-warmed at how quickly kids latch onto them, and wanna sing ‘em over and over and over,” she said of Guthrie’s music. “Then, they come back to me, amazed, ‘My grandpa knows that song!’”
All families get in free as part of the museum’s “Sunday Fun Day” festivities, said Sarah Wright, Gilcrease Museum’s associate curator for family and youth programs.
That includes full access to all galleries, including a “Woody at 100” exhibit. The day also features free art activities from noon-4 p.m. The museum is open until 5 p.m.

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
