Want to see a Golden Globe nominee? Good luck

There's always something special about nominations being announced for the Academy Awards, and I just realized yet another advantage that this event holds over the Golden Globes.

When the Oscar nominations are announced in January, you can go see a film that was mentioned immediately. Not so with the early December announcement for the Globes, especially when Hollywood crams all of its high-profile films into the last two weeks of the year.

The best drama nominees: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road."

That's right: Not one film you've seen in the first 11.5 months of 2008 is a best dramatic picture nominee, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Number of the nominees showing in Tulsa: 0. This is true for almost everyone across the country, although Los Angeles and New York do have access to all but "Revolutionary Road" currently.

Now the good news: Three of the five nominees open in the next two weeks. Look for "Slumdog Millionaire" on Dec. 19. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Frost/Nixon" both open on Dec. 25 in Tulsa.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
