He might have been right about winter in Kentucky at least. Overnight snow covered these crocus that were blooming Wednesday near Maysville, Ky. The area received nearly an inch of snow. (AP Photo/The Ledger Independent, Terry Prather.)
Well… it looks like I could owe a rodent an apology.
Last week, the soothsayer of soothsayers
Punxsutawney Phil said (by virtue of being told what to say by his “Inner Circle” because 1) he can’t talk and 2) he doesn’t actually make any predictions) that we should expect six more weeks of winter. Which is VERY intuitive of him because the Spring Equinox isn’t for another six weeks.
He made that prediction last Thursday when temperatures were near 70 degrees and it was beautiful and it was really hard to believe him.
So, if you’ve been outside recently, you’ve probably noticed that it’s downright cold right now. I mean, not like abnormally cold, but a little bit below what is typical for this time of year. With all the cloudy weather we’ve had the last few days, it certainly looks more like winter, too.
If you haven’t been outside, ask
these people, who were nearly naked in Bartlett Square today.
And then there is the part about the forecast
this weekend… Tulsa’s National Weather Service forecasters have been upping the chances of some winter precipitation for Sunday night and dropping the temperatures.
Right now, there is “a chance of rain, snow, and sleet” Sunday night with a low of 31. The fun continues Monday with the same wording forecast and a high of 43.
Models are looking like a storm could come through this weekend, with better chances of snow on Sunday north of us in Kansas and Nebraska.
It’s very early for any kind of definitive forecast at all, but these temperatures and even the chance of snow is a shift from the majority of January and an indication that it’s probably still winter.
BUT, that groundhog isn’t getting a word out of me until there is 6 inches of snow over 2 inches of ice. (I really, really should not have said that…)
