5 fun and free things to do with your family this weekend

You're not going to run out of things to do this weekend. It will be easy to keep yourself, and the kids, busy with happenings ...

Can't get enough Woody Guthrie? Check out one of these events.

A friend told me he had thought more about Woody Guthrie in the last few days than he had his whole life.

It's no wonder. ...

Just over a week into January, I've already heard people talking about feeling the doldrums of the month.

If you're looking for something fun to do with your family, there's plenty going on this week, including several free events. One of the best? A chance to learn to ice skate - for free- at the Oilers Ice Center on Thursday and Saturday.

Here's a look at the week ahead.

Monday: Bedlam basketball
Take off early from work Monday and head to Stillwater where the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State men's basketball teams face off at Gallager-Iba Arena. If you'd rather stay home, you can watch the game on ESPNU.
When: 6 p.m.
Where: Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater or on ESPNU
Cost: Tickets start at $30. tulsaworld.com/osusports

Tuesday: Family fun night
This one's not just for kids. Bring the whole family to Family Fun Night at Zarrow Regional Library where families can do crafts, play games and listen to stories.
When: 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.
Where: Zarrow Regional Library, 2224 W. 51st St.

Wednesday: Chili Bowl races
It's a big week for racing fans. Races are happening every night this week for the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. Qualifying races are 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Thursday: Learn to ice skate
Want free ice skating lessons? The Oilers Ice Center offers private ice skating lessons for $20 to $30 for a half hour of instruction. But if you want a free class, the center is offering several opportunities, including this week on Thursday and Saturday. The classes are perfect for families, since they're open for kids ages 3 and older, as well as adults.
When: 5: 15 p.m. Thursday and 11:15 a.m. Saturday
Where: Oilers Ice Center, 6413 S. Mingo Road
Cost: Free

Friday: "Waiting for Lefty"
With the holiday shows behind us, here's a one-act play with a more serious tone. "Waiting for Lefty" is the 1935 story of ordinary people during the Depression, and it reveals how they deal with corruption, fear and injustice. It begins Friday and runs through Jan. 21
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday. Other times and dates can be found at tulsaworld.com/tulsapac
Where: John H. Williams Theatre of the Tulsa PAC, 110 E. Second St.

Saturday: Tulsa Promenade Kids Club
It's a Super Bowl theme at the Tulsa Promenade Mall's Kids Club Saturday afternoon. Kids are invited to sing, dance and play during this interactive play time for kids of all ages. Door prizes will be given.
