What was at 15th and Harvard before Big Al's?

A Tulsa World reader recently contacted me to find out if I knew the name of the place on the northeast corner of 15th Street and Harvard Avenue before Big Al's set up shop there.

She said she remembers it being an ice cream place and perhaps had a German-sounding name. I can't recall. Any help out there?

Sure thing...it was called Sondheim's Ice Cream Parlor. Had an old fashioned soda fountain and bar and served excellent sandwiches as well. Many good memories there.

Actually, it was Sontheimer's. I worked there as a teenager and was close friends with the family.

I don't...I was in the Boy Scout troop that met at Eastside Christian Church next door back in the 70's...Reeves was always on the Southwest corner, and I only remember Sondheim's, then it became Big Al's. It is possible that there was a Shively's prior, but that would have been prior to '72.

It was Shively's Ice Cream Parlor back in the 50's. They made their own ice cream. I remember getting a banana split for 50 cents. Mr. & Mrs. Shivley were a very nice couple. I was just a kid then and attended church with them.

Wasn't it Reeves TV, Appliances, and Ice Cream?

Wayne McCombs, director of the Davis Gun Museum and baseball historian, reports that a full page ad in a 1966 Tulsa Oilers baseball program features Cone Corner, an ice cream place, in that location, so apparently it has been more than one ice cream store.

The Ice Cream Place was called Penningtons Ice Cream (not part of Pennington's Drive-In) The couple who owned it were members of East Side Christian Church which was right next door.
