What you can see at Tulsa International Film Festival

This very cool trailer offers a sample of the short films and features (more than 150!) that will be screening at this week's Tulsa International Film Festival.

A very eclectic lineup awaits those who attend to see if Tulsa can join locales like Austin (organizers have definitely used the South by Southwest festival as a model for this event) in becoming home to an annual film event attracting films and people from all over.

Tickets can be purchased, and more information about the festival is available, at tulsaworld.com/tulsafilmfest.

The best news for those looking for a taste is that the four-day festival kicks off on Thursday with a free street party on Boston Avenue, in front of the TCC Center for Creativity. Starting at 6 p.m., there will be live music, followed by a screening of 11 short films, followed by more music going until 11 p.m. or so.

Friday is the kickoff of the hours of screenings (all-access tickets for as low as $25 for students and seniors), which include dozens of feature films, 24 blocks of short films with assigned themes (rom-coms, thrillers, foreign, horror, you name it) and MORE THAN 100 filmmakers on hand to talk about their films and answer questions after the screenings.

There are a lot of elements to what's going on at the inaugural Tulsa International Film Festival that I think would fall into the category of "Awesome!" I hear the kids use that word often, including my own, as well as some middle-aged people, who don't sound as awesome saying it.

But back to those very cool video images. Look here to see what you can see at Tulsa's biggest commitment yet to becoming a film-festival town.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
