What's your favorite Tulsa icon?

I didn't realize that the Tulsa Driller was the largest free-standing statue in the world -- and the third tallest statue, period, in the United States. Well, hmmm and stuff!

While writing a column about fair memories (which will run in Thursday's Weekend magazine -- please read it so they won't fire me), I stumbled upon that little factoid about the Driller.

Were I pressed -- like a panini, if you needed a visual -- to pick my favorite Tulsa structural icon, I imagine the Driller would rank in my Top 3. In fact, it could vie for No. 1 -- along with Boston Avenue Methodist Church or the Philtower.

What would your Top 3 Tulsa icons be? Or just your favorite, hands-down?

Peace, love and paninis ... XOXO

1.The Skyline View coming-in from Kansas on 75. 2. Bordens Ice Cream..down in the Brady District (been there since the 40's and still going strong).
3. RiversideDrive, between 41st & 48th. Still has the ORIGINAL Cement from the 60's (and surely somebody-who is still living-knows why).

Of course my favorite icon is the Driller...he is my big strong (silent) man and he gazes over my neighborhood protectively. Besides, he has a great chest!!!!

Of course my favorite icon is Steve Williamson...he is my big strong (silent) man and he gazes over my neighborhood protectively. Besides, he has a great chest!!!!

Gotta love this question in the context of the rest of the news.
I plagiarize shamelessly too. Sorry futureview.

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
