What's your favorite summer song of all-time?

Rihanna in the summer of 2006, when she sang "SOS," one of my all-time favorite summer songs. Sorry, but I miss how she used to dress. Like, with clothes and stuff.

Summer is probably my favorite season for listening to music.

I'm particularly fondest of pop and Top 40 stuff, as it reminds me of listening to Casey Kasem and Rick Dees on the radio -- especially summers at both grandmothers' homes.

One of my favorite tunes was "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin, made popular thanks to "Top Gun," in 1986. That summer, what I consider the last one of my childhood, had some awesome hits, including Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach," Peter Cetera's "Glory Of Love," Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," Steve Winwood's "Higher Love" and -- to a lesser degree but nonetheless close to my heart -- El DeBarge's "Who's Johnny" from the movie "Short Circuit." (Side note: You know those wing corkscrews? They remind me of the robot, Johnny, from "Short Circuit." Am I alone there? Nevermind ...)

Two decades later, I rocked out (i.e., made a fool of myself chair-dancing) to Rihanna's first No. 1 hit, "SOS." More recently, it's been Katy Perry's "California Gurls" and, just last summer, Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass."

But what are some of YOUR favorites? Maybe we can inspire one another to update our iPod playing lists for the pool and lake.

Peace, love and corkscrew robots ... XOXO

Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
OK, GoBlueGal, which version came first: Martha's or the Mamas and the Papas? I love both.

I love Martha's version - so I don't think I have ever heard the Mama's & Papa's version? What is the oldest version of Summertime Blues? I know that song has been around awhile.

Wikipedia check - no Mama's & Papa's but a VanHalen version in 1982 and Bowie/Jagger version in 1985!

"Dancing in the Streets is a 1964 song first recorded by Martha and the Vandellas". The same song appeared on the 1966 LP "The Mamas and the Papas". I would be hard pressed to pick a single song as my all time favorite summer song. I guess for me it depends on which summer. Come on Down to my Boat Baby was released in July 1967 by Every Mothers Son. They were a one hit wonder. The next year was the infamous Summer of Love and there was a lot of good music. Marvin Gaye's (who also co-wrote Dancing in the Streets) I Heard Through the Grapevine was the number one song of the year. Crimson and Clover was seventeen and the Band had The Weight at number 20.

Summertime Blues was written by Eddie Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart and released by in 1958. I would guess that was the first version.

Yes, but it has also been released by Alan Jackson, The Beach Boys, Blue Cheer, The Who & Olivia Newton John - talk about variety.

So very true. I listed a few tunes from '68. Blue Cheer's version hit number 24 in that same year.

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
