"Slumdog Millionaire" continues to fascinate, and to make money.

Hollywood loves to imitate films that are ultra-successful. For example, a film with a pedigree like "Slumdog Millionaire" that is fast approaching $250 million in worldwide box office, that was made on a budget of just $15 million and that won eight Academy Awards, including best picture.

Is this motion picture underdog story one of Hollywood's greatest underdog stories, or what?

There's the rub. "Slumdog Millionaire" will never fall into the "often imitated, never duplicated" genre, a la comic-book movies after "Spider-Man's" earnings in 2002, or the many stabs at fantasy franchises following the massive box-office and critical acclaim of the "Lord of the Rings" films.

How do you imitate, much less sell, a studio on the idea of a film that's subtitled for one-quarter of the picture, that's set in the dangerous slums of India and that features zero film stars?

"Slumdog Millionaire" is an original, and it's going to stay that way.
