Why SXSW is cool ...

I'm preparing to head out to Austin for five days of the South by Southwest music festival, and thought I'd share a few reasons why the music festival is great:

1. Bands we'll be covering/seeing/maybe blogging about: All have Tulsa ties! Hanson, RadioRadio, El Paso Hot Button, PDA, Congress of a Crow, The Effects, Junior Brown and maybe even Colourmusic, Cheyenne, Edison Glass and Brandon Jenkins! Stay tuned to the Tulsa World for more!

2. The Lemonheads will perform the entire "It's a Shame About Ray" album 1 a.m. Wednesday night at Emo's Annex, 600 Red River St. (The 1992 alt-pop classic has been remastered and will be released in a deluxe package on March 25.)

3. Bands with funky (and often hilarious) names like o'death, Ouija Radio, The Weather Underground, Flaming Arrows Mardi Gras Indians, Girl In A Coma, Songs for Moms, Be Your Own Pet (!!), Scary Mansion, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Ketchup Mania, Phantom Limb, Ringo Deathstarr, The Cuban Cowboys, Does It Offend You Yeah?, Care Bears on Fire, The Jonbenet, Afrobots, Die! Die! Die!, Wussy and possibly my favorite: Death Sentence: Panda! (exclamation point included).

4. Genre-bending fare such as Daryl Hall, R.E.M., Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Billy Bragg, Perry Farrell, NOFX, Phantom Planet, The Vines, My Morning Jacket, Ice Cube, Was (Not Was) and Paramore.

5. Who I'd like to see (wishful thinking, in addition to the local acts mentioned): The Lemonheads, Scott H. Biram, Legendary Shack*Shakers, o'death, Serj Tankian, The Cool Kids, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet with Bela Fleck, Tom Morello, Jay Reatard, American Princes, DeVotchKa, Vampire Weekend, Supersuckers, Thurston Moore w/ Band, Man Man, Pit er Pat, X (!!!), Moby, Ice Cube, Tiny Masters of Today, Ra Ra Riot, The Raveonettes, Ian Moore, The Lonely H, South Austin Jug Band, Tapes 'N' Tapes, British Sea Power and Black Moth Super Rainbow. What?!!? There are, like, over 1,000 bands performing!

Bummer: Dolly Parton canceled her gig. Back problems. Go figure.

Man, I love "Its a shame about Ray," reminds me of college. I'm still glad I opted out this yer, but sounds fun. Did you hear that "Rainbow Around the Sun" was called "the Tommy of our generation" by a Dallas reviewer?

The festival was once cool, then in the mid to late 90s, the big shows started only giving out passes to industry and press folks. Now, it is a typical lame over-commercialized mess largely reserved for company brass. Too bad.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
