Woody Guthrie
Organizers of the
Woody Guthrie Folk Festival (who, like me, are still giddy from watching Guthrie’s “
This Land is Your Land,” performed by
Pete Seeger and
Bruce Springsteen on the steps of the
Lincoln Memorial as part of January’s inaugural celebration) are pleased to announce plans for this summer’s festival.
The 12th annual WoodyFest will be July 8-12 in Okemah - Guthrie’s hometown – located 90 miles east of Oklahoma City.
The free festival celebrates the life and musical legacy of one of America’s greatest folk music songwriters and troubadours.
Artists scheduled to perform include Jimmy LaFave, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, Jon Vezner, Ronny Elliot, John Flynn, Don Conoscenti, Tony Lee Thomas, Audrey Auld, Nancy Apple, John Gorka, Joel Rafael, Sam Baker, the Red Dirt Rangers, Larry Long, David & Adam Amram and Ellis Paul, among others.
Woody Guthrie’s youngest sis, Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon, is the festival’s guest of honor.
Among thousands of songs penned by Guthrie, he is possibly best known for the classics “This Land is Your Land” and “Oklahoma Hills.”
The event was founded in 1998 by the Woody Guthrie Coalition. Arlo Guthrie and his sister, Nora, felt strongly that their father would want the festival accessible to all, and as a result, the festival has always been free.
