Xanadu me, Baby!

Despite what the pop-culture deficient may lead you to believe, “Xanadu” is not a treatment facility for Xanax addicts in Malibu. Not yet, anyway.
For those unfamiliar with Olivia Newton-John’s most talked about big-screen blunder, “Xanadu” was … Well, I just told you. But the soundtrack is kinda cool, with hit singles like “Magic,” “Suddenly” and, of course, “Xanadu,” perhaps the only reason I ever wanted to learn how to skate. Or wear white with such carefree abandon, now that I think about it.
Anyway, I’m trying to settle on a new playlist for my MP3 player, music from which will hopefully distract me from my audibly pumping veins and perv-like panting. So far, I have “Xanadu” and Sarah McLachlan’s “Song for a Winter’s Night,” of which the latter isn’t very conducive to running far or not missing your ex. Lord, don’t get me started on Joni Mitchell’s “River.” Not so much because of the “made my baby cry” lines but the fact it reminds me that I still haven’t learned how to skate.
But I digress. Here’s my pop-heavy playlist of songs that make me want to run, even though I can’t for fear of cardiac arrest – not yet, anyway …
Warm up music:
-"Teenage Sensation" by Gus Gus (Icelandic band, pronounced like "cous cous" except with a G and not at ALL edible – well … Nevermind.)
-"Clumsy" by Fergie (totally dig the irony)
-"Am I The Same Girl?" by Swing Out Sister
-"Professional Widow" by Tori Amos
Full-fledged, blinded-by-sweat music:
-"Special" by Garbage
-"Ray of Light" by Madonna
-"Xanadu," of course
-"If" by Janet Jackson
-Kylie Minogue's entire "Fever" album
Cool-down/Check for pulse music:
-"No One" by Alicia Keys
Yeah, the cool-down/pulse list is always shorter because I'm either collapsing or can't hear by this point in the exercise routine. But there ya have it, wanted to share.
Peace, love and the Electric Light Orchestra ... xoxo

Did you watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade? What did you think of the "Xanadu" spot? The parade had more appeal for me before Macy's moved into Tulsa. I suppose I wanted to believe all Macy's were caught in a time warp. Another fantasy shattered.

My dad lost a bunch of weight when I was in high school, scarring me forever...you see, I got up early one morning to find him in the living room in his underwear dancing to 'I will survive' by gloria gaynor.... :)
I've managed to overcome the trauma, and it really is a very good workout album!

Unfortunately, Bubblyhaus, I didn't catch the Macy's parade, so I missed the "Xanadu" performance. I was too busy being lazy and anti-holiday (which, thankfully, I'm over now -- FOR now). As for you, A., I'm glad you got over such a traumatic experience and can see "I Will Survive" for its aerobic potential. Y'all have a good day! xoxo

Living Wright
While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
