"Zero Dark Thirty" takes top spot in wide release

"Zero Dark Thirty" made 24 million of its 29 million total earnings in its 4th week of release, and jumped from 16th place to first. This is what a wide release will do to a movie with strong word of mouth and a pile of award nominations. December is usually overrun with Oscar contenders, while January is a wasteland where most companies tend to dump their dead and dying because it's cold and we all have to go back to work. So the decision to hold "Zero Dark Thirty" in limited release until now was risky, but ultimately wise.
"Texas Chainsaw 3D" did the opposite, going from the #1 spot to 9th, proving that some people really like gore, but only for a little bit. The latest "Scary Movie" type thing, "A Haunted House" somehow managed to nab the #2 spot, and something called "Gangster Squad," which sounds awesome but probably isn't came in at #3.
The rest of the top ten is full of Oscar fodder and "Django Unchained," which will probably see a little boost after Quentin Tarantino's Golden Globe win last night. It is nice to see "The Hobbit" hanging on in the #6 spot, though.
