Oklahoma City is the dead-center of the independent film world beginning next week.
Screening close to 100 films in seven downtown venues, with something to fit the tastes of everyone and panel discussions as added-value bonuses, deadCENTER Film Festival is celebrating its ninth year.
The five-day filmarama has highlights that include a June 12 appearance by Lloyd Kaufman, creator of "The Toxic Avenger" and co-founder of Troma Studios, the world's longest-operating independent film house. They're the people who brought ol' Toxie to your videotape players way back when.
Bonus Lloyd: The festival is going to screen Troma's latest, "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead," which is being promoted as the first chicken-zombie-horror comedy – with musical numbers!
The closing night event on June 13 honors hippie icon Wavy Gravy, he of Woodstock fame with the quote, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000."
But an icon is more than an 11-word quote, as deadCENTER attendees will find by listening to the man speak in person and watching the documentary, "Saint Misbehavin': The Wavy Gravy Movie."
