Some football fans routinely refer to the August practice period as being “two-a-days.” For the most part, however, two-a-day sessions have been phased out of college football. During any given preseason, most programs won’t have more than three dates on which two football practices are conducted.

At the University of Tulsa – and it is believed that this is a first in Golden Hurricane football history – there will be no two-a-days at all this year.

NCAA guidelines specify that two-a-days can occur only on certain days, and TU’s 2012 preseason calendar wasn’t conducive for two-a-days dates. Plus, Golden Hurricane coach Bill Blankenship explained, “I just think it’s more important to have recovery time than it is to get an extra practice.”

Blankenship says that this will be his first preseason as a player or coach that won't include several days of double-session practices. In 1977, when John Cooper was TU’s first-year coach and Blankenship was a sophomore quarterback, the Golden Hurricane endured three-a-days – several days during which there were three two-hour practice sessions.

“Legendary,” Blankenship says.

TU’s 2012 August camp opens on Thursday. The season begins on Sept. 1, when the Golden Hurricane visits Iowa State (11 a.m., Fox Sports Net).
