Former Oklahoma State receiver Josh Cooper made his NFL debut on Sunday with the Cleveland Browns. Cooper, the Mustang native, saw some action in the Browns first win of the season over Cincinnati. Cooper was targeted three times in the game and caught two passes for 39 yards and his long reception went for 28 yards. Cooper was inactive for the first five games of the season but showed some good chemistry with his Oklahoma State teammate Brandon Weeden.
Cleveland isn’t the best team in the NFL, clearly, and that means roster spots might be available to players who show they can play. Cooper showed the that he can make plays on the practice squad for the Browns, and an injury Jordan Norwood gave him a chance to earn a roster spot this week.
Cooper has often been compared with another slot receiver – New England's Wes Welker - and Oklahoma native. "It's humbling to hear it," Cooper said of the comparison in an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Friday. "I've heard that growing up through college and he's from Oklahoma, so to hear that means a lot. Hopefully, I can prove it."
In his senior season at OSU, Cooper finished second on the team to Justin Blackmon with 71 receptions for 716 yards. Cooper is hoping a little bit of that Oklahoma State magic carries over into the NFL. "[Weeden] usually knows where I'm going to be, and I know where he's going to put the ball," said Cooper. "He depends on me and I'll be in the right spot for him. He knows when I'm going to come out of a route and where I'll be."
Is Cooper a long-term option at receiver for Weeden and the Browns? Does his performance mean he's worth a roster spot on your fantasy football team? It’s a little too early to have true answers for those questions, but I would lean towards no. No matter what the final answer is, it was great to see the long time teammates back on the same field together. Just in a different shade of orange.
