The maker of Twinkies, Ho Hos, Dings Dongs and Sno Balls is asking a bankruptcy court for permission to shut down, blaming a strike by bakers.

It has started another furor among lovers of the snacks.

I wrote a blog in January after news broke that Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy protection.

At that time the iconic sweets started flying off the shelves. So, I predict another rush on the treats.

The competiton for a space in childrens' lunchboxes is a lot stiffer than it used to be. It can't be easy on Hostess to say in business. Just think about all of the prepackaged snacks available now compared to 30 years ago.

And don't get me started on the gluten!!!

Yet, if your grocery aisle has been picked clean and you need a nostalgic fix, here are some recipes that might do the trick.

Homemade Twinkie Cake

1 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Crisco
1/2 cup cold butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 baked yellow cake

Directions:
1. Mix flour with milk and boil until thick. (It will be very thick) Cool.
2. Beat until fluffy and add other ingredients one at a time beating well after each addition.
3. Put between layers of cooled cake.
4. You can let the cake stand one day to develop flavor.
5. Cut into bars and wrap individually in plastic wrap.
