Tulsa needs to beat Colorado State this week. It’s as simple as that.
The Golden Hurricane is 0-1 after losing last Thursday at Bowling Green. Saturday night, they host Colorado State, which lost Sunday at Colorado. Up next: a visit to No. 16 Oklahoma. After that, Iowa State comes to town on Sept. 26.
The last thing TU needs is to start such a promising season with an 0-4 non-conference record.
None of this is to say that TU can’t beat Iowa State, or even OU. But everyone around here knows the Sooners looked probably better than we expected last week in pounding Louisiana-Monroe 34-0. And while Iowa State now has the stigma of losing to FCS Northern Iowa in its opener, it’s still a Big 12 team with Big 12 talent which, frankly, might be a bit on the desperate side when the Cyclones come to Chapman Stadium.
Anyway, the Tulsa team that laid an egg against Bowling Green certainly isn’t in a position to take anything for granted. Forget OU and Iowa State. Forget the final season in Conference USA. Tulsa needs to beat Colorado State. That’s all that matters right now.
“It’s always huge,” TU coach Bill Blankenship said Tuesday. “You never want to get into a streak going the wrong way. So we were very good a year ago in bouncing back after the tough ones, and we’ll find out. I think that’s what we’re made of.
“I know the attitude has been very focused, very deliberate, but positive from the players. They came out Sunday and worked very, very hard on a short amount of time. I’ll be shocked if we don’t get that same kind of response from them (at practice) today.”
